Most Delicious Spargelsuppe is found in Goettingen

(Rochester, NY)

If you ever find yourself in the town of Goettingen, there's a funny looking food truck just down the street from the Leine Hotel and up the street from the local youth hostel on Groner Landstrasse. It's in the shape of a giant coke can. The Chef, not cook, but Chef is named Roman. If you are there in Spargelsuppe season, you have just found the BEST Spargelsuppe in all of Germany. He has had offers to cook in NYC, offers to set up his own restaurant and offers of a great salary if he would only move, but no. I got the sense that Roman cares deeply for those who live in his neighborhood. He's kind of like the local grandpa who makes sure none of his "kids" go to bed hungry. He found out that I had not yet been initiated, and very kindly and generously invited me in to try his own special Spargelsuppe. All I can say is that I was blown away. I have never tasted anything as delicious. First, it doesn't taste like asparagus. It looks like asparagus with a bad case of anemia but it's flavor is delicate, rich & full. We then went on to several other cities and tried their suppe, but no one came close to Roman's little Coke can. Tell him I said Hi! and thank you for introducing me to such an awesome culinary experience and have a schnitzel while you're there.
